The Virtual Taleland is OPA’s submission for the design competition of a museum and a theme park for Hans Christian Andersen, in Odense, Denmark.

The architectural aim is to extract the dark feelings evoked by Andersen’s fairytales and translate them into space and ambiance. The proposed House of Fairytales should expand beyond the confinement of a single building and offer a haunting experience to its visitors, similar to Andersen’s stories. The proposed design is a subterranean museum combining two important desirables; to create a breathtaking facility and offer as much open space as possible to the public. Focusing on symbolism and poetics of space, the design consists of an underground inverted pyramid and a mirror-clad tower, a new landmark for Odense’s skyline.
